Transportation in Lijiang is well spread out and is diverse and easy to get. Lijiang is well connected by buses, taxis and aero planes, with the other cities in China. Transport within the city is equally well laid out. Transportation in Lijiang is marked by superb services.
Lijiang has no train connection. The city however has an airport and a convenient link to the highway system within Yunnan Province. Lijiang Airport provides good air connections to other cities in China. Visitors however prefer to travel to Lijiang by long-distance bus from Dali. Therefore, Kunming Airport which has more domestic and international connections is preferred by travelers from home and abroad.
After arriving at Lijiang Airport one can get into the heart of the city by airport shuttle bus or taxi. The shuttle buses run between the airport and the civil aviation ticket office in Lantian Hotel. From there one can get to the Old Town by taxi. The bus journey takes about half an hour. Alternatively, one can travel to the old town directly by a taxi.
The highway system of Yunnan Province is reasonably good. Lijiang has four bus stations operating services to Kunming, Shangri-La and tourist attractions in and around Lijiang.
Public transportation in Lijiang City is relatively convenient. Apart from Old Town, which is only reachable on foot, one can go to any corner of this city easily by city buses and taxi. As Lijiang is not a very large city, so getting around by bicycle or by foot is the best mode of conveyance to enjoy the beauty of the place.
There are more than 10 bus lines running in Lijiang City. These buses connect every corner of the new district other than the Old Town. In old town no vehicles are allowed to enter. The ticket fare is reasonably cheap. Every morning, the No.7 bus departs from Hongtaiyang Square in the north of the Old Town to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The bus No.8 which departs from the Department Store runs a circular route.
Lijiang also has about one thousand taxis. For the first 3 kilometers one has to pay a fixed rate and thereafter for every additional kilometer a cumulative fixed rate is levied. One can bargain for a reasonable price with the driver if one just travels in the urban area.
