Quadrilateral with bastions at each corner and about 100 meters in circumference, Monte Fort, Macau had a strong fortification. The fort was protected by cannons on the four sides. There was an ancient tower which was one of the sites of the Society of Jesus.
The fort buildings as well as the Jesuit College and St. Paul's Church were destroyed by a devastating fire in 1838.
In 1965, a single-storey barrack built in South European style of architecture was converted into the Macau Meteorological Bureau. The Macau Museum featuring the development and the customs of Macau was established here in 1998.
