It was established during the reign of the Northern Song Dynasty between the years 1068 and 1094. Later on the pagoda was refurbished between the years of 1975 and 1977.

Located at an approximate distance of about thirty kilometers in the city of Songjiang, the Four Cornered Pagoda in Shanghai in China is actually positioned to the south-western direction of Shanghai. The pagodas built during the period of the Song Dynasty usually featured an octagonal base. Whereas this particular pagoda stands out as it features a rectangular shape. This was noticed during the Tang Dynasty.

The sub-base of the Four Cornered Pagoda, Shanghai inclines to some extent to the south-eastern direction. Tourist can also notice that the covered shelters on the south-eastern part are comparatively longer. The builders of the Song Dynasty have constructed the structure in such patterns in order to protect the pagoda from natural hazards such as typhoons from the south-eastern directions.
