Hanshan Temple



The Hanshan Temple, Zhouzhuang is also known as the Cold Mountain Temple. The temple lies in the south west of Changmenwai and is at a distance of 3.5 kilometers. The Hanshan Temple, Zhouzhuang is around one kilometer from the Lingering Garden and the Maple Bridge Town in the outskirts of Suzhou.

The Hanshan Temple, Zhouzhuang serves as a major attraction in Zhouzhuang. Built during the Tianjian period of Liang Dynasty, the temple is an example of the most ancient sites in town. It is named after an old Monk called Hanshan who was responsible for the care of the temple in the time of the Tang dynasty. The temple portrays one of the best scenic beauties in the area. It is one of the ten most famous temples in the country.

The Hanshan Temple, Zhouzhuang was reconstructed and restored many times. The present temple structure was constructed during the Qing era by the Emperors called Guangxu and Xuantong. The temple covers an area of 45 hectares. The main attraction of the temple is its splendid architecture. Tourists mainly take the ferry rides across the water channels in the town.

The Hanshan Temple in Zhouzhuang has a main hall with a circular gallery. You will find the Sutra Library, the Bell Tower and the Pavilion Tower within the temple. The Pavilion Tower is also known as the Maple River Tower. The Bell Tower of the temple holds great significance. It is often associated with legendary tales and stories. You can hear the toll of the bell with the deep chants of the monks in the temple. This makes the ambiance calm and soothing.

People love to visit the Hanshan Temple, Zhouzhuang especially on New Year's Eve when listening to the toll of the Bell is considered to be Holy. On New Year, tourists and visitors throng the temple to listen to the hundred and eight tolls of the Bell and wish happiness and good luck for themselves and their loved ones. Apart from the Bells, the temple also houses a cultural relic with a stone tablet. The tablet is inscribed with a poem and stone carvings. Thus the Hanshan Temple, Zhouzhuang is one of the remarkable Zhouzhuang Tourist Attractions.
