History
Mangaia, traditionally known as Auau Enua, which means terraced, is second largest island after Rarotonga. The island, approximately 18 million years old, is the oldest island in the Pacific. Rising 15,600 feet above the ocean floor, the island has a central volcanic plateau and is surrounded by a high ring of cliffs of fossilized coral. Mangaia is renowned for its 'eis' or shell neckbands. These are made from the shells of the tiny yellow snail, the pupu, which comes out only after rain.
The capital of Mangaia is located in the village of Oneroa. Apart from it, there are two more villages, namely Tamarua (south) and Ivirua (east/northeast). Historically, there have been five districts and starting in the north, they include Tavaenga, Karanga, Ivirua, Tamarua, Veitatei and Keia.
Before the missionary settlement, Mangaia was ruled by the violent warriors and during a trip to London, Numangatini, the king of Mangaia received from Queen Victoria the Union Jack.
