Sightseeing in Mauke

Sightseeing in Mauke is a feast to the eyes. Mauke is at the end of the railroad north from Yaounde. The place is lavishly interspersed with the occasional coconut palm. Without the coconut palm the landscape would resemble that of rural Europe. So Sightseeing in Mauke is an enchanting and an interesting affair.

Mauke lies in the far south-eastern corner of the Cook Islands. It is a raised atoll named after its legendary founder, Uke. Mauke is surrounded by the fossilized cliffs of "makatea" which are the characteristics of the region.

Mauke is virtually flat. The center of Mauke is about 100 feet above sea level. The island has a circumference of 12 miles. Its ancient name was Akatokamanava. Europeans called it Parry's Island.

The magnificent hardwood trees thrive on the coral limestone. Sight seeing in Mauke includes enjoying and hiking through the luxuriant jungle interior. Those who dare not or are physical less fit can follow the road right around the coast.

Mauke offers numerous coves and white beaches. There are several caves where one can swim. The huge Motuanga Cave has galleries which reach out under the reef. Its name in the local language means the cave of 100 rooms.

The best beaches are on the south side of the island and are deserted with long stretches of clean white sand encompassing a turquoise crystal clear lagoon. Mauke is a perfect island to explore on foot or motorbike. Motorbike rentals are available for hire.

While on a visit to Mauke one must not miss a visit to the Cook Islands Christian Church. It is one of the most fascinating buildings in the Cook Islands. With its long rectangular courtyard, tall gateways and interior decoration of crescents and interlocking arches the church has an almost Mohammedan touch to it. Due to an old dispute between the two villages, the church was divided in the center with each part belonging to the respective villages. So each side of the church is decorated differently.

Though today the dividing partition has been removed there are two gateways. Each of the gateways lead to a separate door, one for each village. Colorful designs are painted in green, pink, blue, yellow, and white on the doors. Detailed online information on Sightseeing in Mauke can be obtained on travel.mapsofworld.
