The Basilica de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles or the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels Cartago is the most famous building of Cartago. Situated on the east side of the town, the church is dedicated to the patron saint of Costa Rica.
The ornate shrine of the church contains the tiny figure of La Negrita, the Black Virgin. It is believed that La Negrita first revealed herself on this site to a peasant girl in the year 1635. This statue is famous throughout the country for its healing powers. Many pilgrims visit the city annually on August 2, the feast day of the Virgin of the Angels.
To the north of Cartago lies the fuming Irazu Volcano. To the south one can come across the lovely Parque Nacional Chirripo. From this park one can climb Central America’s highest peak, Cerro Chirripo. The peak stands at a height of 12,529 feet. It is an ideal climb for aggressive hikers.
The most visited Orosi Valley lies to the south east of Cartago. Visible from the top of Irazu it is generally considered one of the most beautiful valleys in Costa Rica. The Reventazon River makes its way through this steep-sided valley and collects in the lake formed by the Cachi Dam.
