Cartago is a city in Costa Rica, about 25 km east of the capital which is San Jose. It is at a height of about 1435 meters above sea level on the Cartago River which is at the base of the Irazu Volcano. The rock is supposed to be in the same position as it was when La Negrita at first appeared. But the rock has been moved as the basilica was rebuilt. The remains in Cartago were of the Santiago Apostol Church. It has never been the first Basilica. The Basilica was at first built in La Puebla de los Pardos where it is located these days. Cartago is house of the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. It is one of the most important higher education organizations in the country and one of most important manufacturing schools of Central America.

The main products of Cartago are potatoes, onions, milk, and orchids. These products used to hold up more than 90% of the economy of the city though other wealth such as computer technologies have risen since the last decade.
