Cartago

Cartago is a city in Costa Rica, about 25 km east of the capital which is San Jose. It is at a height of about 1435 meters above sea level on the Cartago River which is at the base of the Irazu Volcano. Cartago is the capital of Cartago province and in 2003 the population of the city was 141,524 people.

In Cartago a lot of pilgrims come in every twelve months in order to visit the principal church of the city. The principal church is the huge Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles. The people mainly visit the place on the feast day of the Virgin of the Angels that is on the 2nd of August. The church has a statue of the Black Madonna known as La Negrita. This statue has apparently had immense curative powers. The sick people come to her statue in hope of a phenomenon from La Negrita.

In Cartago La Negrita appeared to a little native girl in the year in 1635 whose name was Juana Pereira. This was according to myths in Costa Rica. The rock where La Negrita made her assume appearance is kept in a backroom in the basilica and is respected as a holy leftover and object of motivation. The rock is supposed to be in the same position as it was when La Negrita at first appeared. But the rock has been moved as the basilica was rebuilt. It is frequent for pilgrims to touch the rock in respect.

The remains in Cartago were of the Santiago Apostol Church. It has never been the first Basilica. The Basilica was at first built in La Puebla de los Pardos where it is located these days. Cartago is house of the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. It is one of the most important higher education organizations in the country and one of most important manufacturing schools of Central America.

The main products of Cartago are potatoes, onions, milk, and orchids. These products used to hold up more than 90% of the economy of the city though other wealth such as computer technologies have risen since the last decade.
