Heredia is situated in the north central part of the country. To the north it borders Nicaragua, to the province Limon is there and to the south the province San Jose and to the west is Alajuela. It is the capital is the city of Heredia.

In order to reach Heredia, the visitors have to From San José, take the Limón highway from San Jose, through Braulio Carrillo National Park and upon reaching the lowlands the visitors have to take the first left turn that is towards Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. Then about 28 km. down this road, the visitors have to look for a enclosed bus stop on the left with the OET logo around the sides of the roof. After that they have to turn to the left on the gravel road beside the bus stop and go after the road for about half a kilometer to the La Selva gate which will lead them to Heredia.
In Heredia, the weather is very warm throughout the year. The temperatures are tempered by the amount of cloud cover that affects the area and also brings an average four meters of rainfall. The rains are spread throughout the year, but the rainiest periods mostly starts from June till August and November till January.
The size of the province of Heredia has been tripled since 1968 with the gaining of eight neighboring parcels throughout the years. Moreover, the formation of the Braulio Carrillo National Park expansion in 1986 successfully connects La Selva with a wooded elevation transect that stretches right to the top of Barva Volcano. Nevertheless, with rapid colonization of the Sarapiquí lowlands since the 1970's, conversion of rain forests to agricultural land has turned La Selva into a forested neck of land when not long ago it was part of a vast forested region.
