Browse through San Jose travel guide and get to know more about its history. During the early years of the Central Valley's colonization in the 1560's, families began moving west from the village of Cartago. One of the first places settled was the valley of Aserrí to the south, which is now known as the city of San José. About 170 years later in the year 1736, the inhabitants of the valley of Aserrí had to move to a site known as "Boca del Monte" at the orders of the authorities. A church dedicated to Saint Joseph was established as a consequence. The parish came to be known as "San José de la Boca del Monte en el Valle de Aserrí". Owing to problems arising out of scarcity of water, in the nearby area around the church, the inhabitants of Aserrí declined to move to the new site. In the year 1751, water was finally provided to the area, also known as Villa Nueva.
By the year 1824, the population of San José had risen to over more than 15,000. The city had already become a capital of the country of Costa Rica. This took place following a brief civil war over the issue of remaining independent or becoming a part of the Mexican empire. Those who favored independence won and the capital was shifted from Cartago to San José.
