Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, Zagreb

Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, Zagreb is one of the major tourist attractions in Zagreb. Locally known as Strossmayerova Galerija Starih Majstora, Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters is located on the second floor of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Croatia. The building of the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, Zagreb is a 19th century palace, which is also admired by the visitors.

The building of the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters in Zagreb was designed by the Viennese architect Friedrich Schmidt. Although the building was completed in 1880, the Gallery was solemnly opened for the visitors for the first time on 9th November, 1884. Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, Zagreb is named after its founder and largest donor, Juraj Strossmayer, the Bishop of Bosnia, Dakovo, and Syrmia. A huge donation of 284 specimens comprises mostly of paintings of Italian Renaissance, mannerism and baroque painting schools and the late Venetian settecento.

The six major collections at the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, Zagreb can be categorized as following:

  • The Uzorinac Collection: includes 35 pieces donated by the heirs of Mirko Uzorinac, a genre painter following the impressionist school.
  • The Csikos Collection: donated by Julije Csikos to the Gallery in 1974, the collection consists of 417 pieces. Csikos was one among the founders of The Zagreb Visual Arts Academy and the first representatives of symbolism in Croatia.
  • The Sebalj Collection: a remarkable artist of school of Expressionism, Ivan Sebalj is contemporary Croatian painter.
  • The Svecnjak Collection
  • The Sulentic Collection: includes the donation of Zlatko Sulentic's wife Bozena to the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, Zagreb in 1984. The collection boasts of 64 extraordinary paintings.
  • The Auer Collection: includes the works of Robert Auer and Ivo, the collection displays bourgeois world presented through compositions, nudes and portraits.
