Rijeka is a harbor city on the northern coast of Kvarner Gulf in Croatia. Advanced transportation, connections with the neighboring areas and a rich naval tradition have helped a lot in developing the largest Croatian port in Rijeka. The port town serves as a major transportation hub in central Europe. The city is also linked to major European cities such as Budapest and Vienna by a railway network.
The port of Rijeka serves as the main crossroads of the Adriatic tourist traffic that passes from
central Europe to the central and southern Adriatic sea. The main roads connect Rijeka to the neighboring cities via Gorski Kotar. From Rijeka, the roads lead to the north towards Istria along the border with the Republic of Slovenia. Rijeka is also an important railway junction in Croatia. The airport of Rijeka is situated near Omisalj on the island of Krk.
During the period between the two World Wars, Rijeka lost its significance as a port as the connections to hinterlands were cutoff completely. But after the World War II the port of Rijeka in Croatia regained its position and has become the seat of several shipping companies. Today it is one of the most important commercial centers in the country with heavy industries such as shipyard, oil refinery, diesel engines, ship cranes, ship equipment and paper production. While major industries are concentrated in the city, tourism, farming, forestry and fishing industries have been developed in the fringes of Rijeka City.
Being an important industrial hub in the country, Rijeka has grown as a center of business tourism. The cit hosts several business events, such as Spring Fair in April; Automobile Fair in May; North Adriatic Fair in October, Nautica and the Christmas Fair. Apart from business events, several cultural events and shows are organized in the city throughout the year. Some of the most popular cultural shows are the Biennial of Young Artists, an international exhibition of young and the Rijeka Summer concerts and theatrical performances in the Old Town and in the cathedral of St. Vitus. The Rijeka carnival is one of the biggest carnivals in Europe.
The city harbors numerous entertainment centers, theaters, shopping arcades and accommodation options. Besides all the modern facilities, pleasant Mediterranean weather and the mountainous landscapes of the Primorsko-Goranska County around Rijeka add charm to the city and make it one of the most frequented Tourist destinations in Croatia.
