Varazdin is one of the most frequented Tourist Destinations in Croatia. Situated on the right bank of Drava river in north-western Croatia, Varazdin City lies 79 kilometers northeast of Croatian capital Zagreb. The city of Varazdin is the cultural center of the Zagorje and Medimurje regions in Croatia. With textiles, artificial silk production, leather processing and footwear factory, wood and timber works, metallurgy and printing industry the city is also an important industrial hub in Croatia. Food processing is also another part of the large industry here. The city is known for its fruit and vegetable canning and vegetable oil production.
Once the capital of Croatia, Varazdin is one of the most important cultural and tourist centers in northern Croatia. The Baroque buildings at the city center are beautifully preserved. The fortified old town, the central part of the town, several museums, art galleries and the art collections as well as the Varazdin cemetery, protected and maintained as a horticultural monument, comprise the main tourist attractions.
The Town Museum, situated in Stari Grad hosts many exhibitions related to the history of the Varazdin and its surrounding regions from the pre-historic period up to the present day. The vast collection include over ten thousand stuffed insects, gathered by Franjo Koscec Esq. The collection is stored in the Entomological Department in Herzer Palace in Varazdin.
The city also boasts of a number of cultural institutions which depict the art and cultural history of the city. While you set out for sightseeing in Varazdin visit City Archives which has a collection of documentation from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The Archives of the Cazma Chapter is hosting the festival called the Varazdin Baroque Evenings since 1971.
These apart, The Drava river flowing by the town and Varazdin Lake provide a haven for the anglers in the country with wide variety of fresh water fish. Various sports and recreational facilities are also available in the town.
Varazdin is the venue of numerous cultural and entertainment events. The most notable are the Varazdin Baroque Evenings, a great musical event in Croatia. International Festival of Wind Orchestras and the Days of the Book held in October are other important events in Varazdin.
The vibrant commercial center Varazdin lies at the intersection of the main roads between Varazdin and the Slovenian border and is easily accessible from the capital city, Zagreb. Buses depart every 30 minutes from Zagreb to Varazdin. The tour takes about 2 hours.
