Ciego de Avila is located in Ciego de Avila province in Cuba. It is the capital city of the province of Ciego de Avila. The province is situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The province includes the spectacular islands of Cayo Guillermo and Caya Coco. The islands are covered with amazingly beautiful beaches. The province is dotted with plantations of citrus fruits, sugar pine apples and bananas. Ciego de Avila was founded in the year 1840. At that time the city had 263 people. The municipal government of the city was created in 1877 . In 1877 Ciego de Avila became independent from the administration of Moron city in Cuba. The city gained prominence when the Spanish army constructed the Trocha de Jucaro a Moron, a fortified military line, to prevent the insurrectionist Cuban forces from infiltrating to the western region of Cuba at the time of the First War of Independence( 1868-1878) of Cuba from the Spanish. The city houses many Spanish colonial buildings. Most of these buildings were designed by Angela Hernandez de Jimenez. She is known as the founder of the city of Ciego de Avila.
