Ciego de Avila is located in Ciego de Avila province in Cuba. It is the capital city of the province of Ciego de Avila. The province is situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The province includes the spectacular islands of Cayo Guillermo and Caya Coco. The islands are covered with amazingly beautiful beaches. The province is dotted with plantations of citrus fruits, sugar pine apples and bananas. The city houses a port called the Jucaro which is situated in the Caribbean Sea, tucked on the coast of Gulf of Ana Maria. Ciego de Avila covers an area of 445 square kilometers.

Ciego de Avila was founded in the year 1840. At that time the city had 263 people. The municipal government of the city was created in 1877 . In 1877 Ciego de Avila became independent from the administration of Moron city in Cuba. The city gained prominence when the Spanish army constructed the Trocha de Jucaro a Moron, a fortified military line, to prevent the insurrectionist Cuban forces from infiltrating to the western region of Cuba at the time of the First War of Independence( 1868-1878) of Cuba from the Spanish. The city houses many Spanish colonial buildings. Most of these buildings were designed by Angela Hernandez de Jimenez. She is known as the founder of the city of Ciego de Avila.

Ciego de Avila experiences a semitropical type of climate. The average yearly temperature is 25 degree Celsius. During the summer season the average temperature is 27.2 degree Celsius. The summers are hot and humid. Northeastern trade winds blow over the region in summer. The humidity in summer is 80 percent. The average annual rainfall is around 1320 millimeters. Ciego de Avila is visited by tropical hurricanes during August-October.
