It is ideally situated on the main coast road to Trinidad, between the communities of San Antón and Guaos. The garden was the creation of Edward Atkins, who owned vast sugar plantation in the area. In 1912, he designed the garden with the purpose of conducting experiments to improve his growing techniques. The ground was created as experimentation area by Atkins for a sugar growing research center and later he added other tropical plants and trees.

Jardin Botanico Soledad, Cienfuegos in Cuba was bought in 1919 by the University of Harvard and it was turned into the Harvard Botanical Station for Tropical Research and Sugar Cane Investigation. In 1961, the land became a property of the government and was known as the Jardin Botanico Soledad, named for the Soledad sugar estate that was owned by Edwin Atkins.

The botanic garden of Cienfuegos has a rich bamboo collection of 23 species and there are 89 species of rubber trees and 400 of cactus. The collection is the 307 varieties of palm trees in Jardin Botanico Soledad, Cienfuegos.
