The name of the city in that period was Fernardina de Jagua. It was named after Ferdinand VII of Spain. In 1829, Cienfuegos turned out to be a town and then a city in the year 1880. It was then when the city acquired its present name, Cienfuegos.
The Urban Historic Centre of Cienfuegos was encrypted on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in the year 2005. It referred to Cienfuegos as the most apt example showcasing the use of 19th century ‘Spanish Enlightenment’ methods in designing an urban area.
