Santa Clara forms the capital city of the province of Villa Clara in Cuba. Situated in the central region of the nation, this city was established by 175 people. With few yet interesting places of interest, Santa Clara makes for a fascinating tourist spot.
Among the 175 people, who were responsible in the formation of this city, 138 represented two eminent families. The rest 37 people belonged to seven families, along with a governor and a priest. All of them had performed a mass under a Tamarind tree. It was then when the city of Santa Clara in Cuba was actually founded. This place is referred to as ‘Loma Del Carmen’. It is here where a plush park featuring a church and a monument dedicated to that famous event under the Tamarind tree, is located.
Santa Clara was known by few more names earlier, such as Cayo Nuevo, Dos Cayos, Villa Nueva de Santa Clara, pueblo Nuevo de Anton Diaz, and Villa Clara.
The first structures which were constructed in Santa Clara include the City Council or Cabildo and a palm tree church. It reflected ancient colonial styled art. This was followed by the formations of a commercial center, a theater, public libraries, clubs and halls for dance. At present, Santa Clara forms an essential stopover between the eastern part of Cuba and Havana.
The reputed images which are identified with Santa Clara are Ernesto “Che” Guevara and Marta Abreu de Estevez. The former was a revolutionist, while the latter was considered to be the “Benefactress of the city”.
The last battle related to the Revolution in Cuba took place in Santa Clara in the latter half of the year 1958.
