The Cuban National Botanic Garden, Havana is a six hundred hectares of land which is dedicated to the varied flora from around the world. Fidel Castro announced on January 6, at the inauguration ceremony of Valle Grande, at Cordon de la Habana about the creation of a Botanical Gardens.
The Cuban National Botanic Garden, Havana was finally opened to the public in 1984 with the objective of tropical vegetable biodiversity and also the need for conservation through actions as ell s environmental education. The Garden belongs to the Faculty of Biodiversity of the University of Havana.
With the scientific objective, the garden has a conservation laboratory where in vitro plants of the endangered plants are nurtured. There is a highly specialized library in the garden. The Herbarium is in existence for over 100 years and has near to 20000 samples. It is the second largest in Cuba. There is a Japanese section at the garden, called Kaiyu-Shiki-teien, which literally means the Trekking Garden and it is a nice place to meditate or contemplate.
The Cuban National Botanic Garden, Havana remains busy throughout the year, especially in the months of July and August, when different summer program like clowns, puppeteer, children's theater companies and also arts and sports activates are held.
