Dance Museum, Havana

The history of Dance Museum, Havana is related to the fact that Havana has always been a hometown of one of the most brilliant personalities in the history of ballet. Dance Museum, Havana, located in the Vedado neighborhood, was opened to the people in 1999. Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso who founded the National Ballet of Cuba, was behind the museum. The personal collection of Alicia, objects representing the world dance, relics given by eminent personalities and balletomanes and other items related to the career of Alicia, make up the major part of the exhibition. It not only portrays the personal history of the great artist, but also represents the history of dance.

Dance Museum, Havana features eight permanent exhibition rooms, a specialized library, an information center and a video room. The exhibition room reserved for Alonso, displays her costume for Giselle’s first act, a ballet play that made here the reigning star. You can also see here the costume for one of the most acclaimed mythical characters, Carmen, designed by Salvador Fernández. You will also find here the replica of the costume of Maja in one of her performances where she danced La Cachucha. It was donated by the Vienna Opera. A cloak of Anna Pavlova and a costume of Mirta Plá, the first dancer of the National Ballet of Cuba in the premiere of Tarde en la Siesta, can be seen here.

Rare photographs including those depicting Merce Cunningham’s and Martha Graham’s performances in Cuba, pumps, and decorations are also part of the exhibition.

The most ancient piece in the Dance Museum, Havana is a book ‘The Art of Writing Dance’ by Raoul Auger Feuillet from 1700. This book with demonstrative signs and letters was a gift given to Alicia. You will also find here objects related to Elssler, the famous Austrian dancer who visited Havana in 1841. Alicia Alonso also inaugurated the Jean-Georges Noverre Conference Hall. It was a tribute to the great French theoretician, dancer, choreographer and professor. The conference hall is also used as a venue for theoretical debate, film exhibitions and other activities related to dance.
