La India Fountain, Havana

La India Fountain, Havana is one of the must visit sites which you should not miss during your Havana Tours. History has it that the fountain was sculpted in 1837. La India Fountain, Havana is regarded as one of the most representative symbols of the capital. The La India Fountain was sculpted in white marble of Carrara like other beautiful fountains of the city. La India Fountain in Havana belongs to the same league of Los leones on the San Franciso de Asis Square and the Neptuno on the Malecon Avenue. All these date back to the colonial time.

La India Fountain, Havana was first placed in Campo de Marte and now it is set at the Parque de la Fraternidad in Centro Habana. The main body of the work is a female figure, an Indian woman. The statue is a fine example of sensuality and femininity. A revealing robe is draped quite casually around her body and the naked torso. It is interesting to note that two motifs dominate this work and this is similar to the other group of sculptures of Old Havana too. There is the city shield that the Indian holds in his right hand and a flowing pot in her left hand. The first refers to the first three fortifications of the city -- La Fuerza, El Morro and La Punta fortresses. The second one is a cornucopia of Creole fruits, topped with the pineapple which is referred to as the queen of all Cuban fruits.

Apart from the La India Fountain, Havana, you will find here other places to visit and these include Morro Castle, Cathedral of Havana, The Museum of Decorative Arts, Museum of the Revolution, National Museum of Fine Arts, La Cabana, San Salvador de la Punta Fortress, El Capitolio, Colon Cemetery, Victor Hugo Museum, The Scale Model of Havana, Museum of Regla, Oswaldo Guayasamín Museum The House of the Arabians, Asia House, African Museum, Dance Museum, The Carlos Enriquez House, Jose Lezama Lima House, Monument to the victims of Maine, Bacardi Building, Regla, Lenin Park, Miramar, Cuban National Botanic Garden and Expocuba.
