Morro Castle, Havana

Guarding the entrance to Havana bay is Morro Castle, Havana. The construction plan was commissioned to the Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli and it was built in 1589. At this time Cuba was controlled by Spain and it was named after the biblical Magi. The Morro Castle, Havana was later captured by the British in 1762.

Morro Castle, Havana is situated on the opposite side of the harbor from Old Havana. It is visible from a great distance around as it is a dominating structure at the port entrance. The Castle was built to protect many attacks by French, Dutch and the English pirates. The castle is armed with heavy guns, with a battery of 12 canons with the names of the 12 Apostles. The castle was thought to be impregnable for around 150 years.

Morro Castle, Havana finally fell to a fleet of 44 ships with3000 canons and 14000 soldiers on board after two months of resistance. The English troops approached from the nearby hills to a distance of 200 meters of the castle and made explosion of gunpowder to make a breach in its wall. A year later, on July 6, 1763, a treaty was signed, called the Treaty of Fontainebleau and Havana was returned to Spain in return for Florida. Since then Morro Castle, Havana went through extensive renovation along with the rebuilding of the city.
