To accomplish the task of San Salvador de la Punta Fortress, Havana, the eminent personality, Juan de Tejeda was chosen as the governor of the island as he was an expert in the affair of fortifications. To assist him, he brought along the Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli.

The construction of the San Salvador de la Punta Fortress, Havana began by the year of 1590 and continued for long. However in the year of 1595, this fortress was destroyed by a severe hurricane and after that it was rebuilt with more strong walls.

Due to the small distance between La Punta and El Morro a weighty copper chain was introduced between them in the year of 1630. The beautiful work of the fortress enhances the beauty of this architectural piece of work.

Much later, at the San Salvador de la Punta Fortress, Havana four esplanades were built to house large number of artillery pieces to strengthen the fortification system. You find a canon engraved in the rocks at this fortress. The park that encircles the citadel is paved with remarkable red ceramic tiles.

San Salvador de la Punta Fortress, Havana holds an exhibition of various valuable metals, weapons, wonderful stones, porcelain, chains, ceramics, navigation tools and sextants that have been found during the shipwrecks.
