History of Cuba




Before coming to Cuba, browse through the history of Cuba to get some insight into the glorious past of this country. The history of Cuba is linked with the history of Spain too, which was a supreme colonial power in Cuba at one point of time in the past.

From the history of Cuba you would come to know that the first human settlement was noted in Cuba during the 3500 BC. The Taino Indians, the main native group in Cuba came here during the 1250 AD. The history of Cuba includes information on the Spanish adventurers under Christopher Columbus. He first came to the shores of Cuba during the year 1492 and claimed it for Spain after naming the island Juana.

By virtue of the Papal Bull in 1494, Spain claimed supremacy in Cuba. In 1508, Spanish explorer Sebastián de Ocampo circumnavigated Cuba and declared it as an island. Diego Velázquez was the first Spanish governor in Cuba. Cuba thereafter became a colony of Spain and remained so for four centuries.

It was in the year 1520 that Cuba first saw slavery in its society. The first group of slaves came here to work for a gold mine named Jaugua. A landmark moment in the history of Cuba came when the slaves of the Jobabo mines revolted against their dire conditions.

The war against Spanish occupation went on for years. Finally Cuba gained independence from Spain after three wars such as La Guerra de los Diez Años, La Guerra Chiquita and the War of '95.

1902 was the year which saw the beginning of Cuba’s own government and it marked a milestone in the history of Cuba. However, the Platt Amendment was also came with to it, according to which USA got the right to intervene militarily in Cuba.

In World War I, Cuba waged war against Germany just after the USA entered into the War. Fidel Castro declared Cuba a socialist country in 1961. An important event in the history of Cuba is the 1962 Cuban missile crisis when erstwhile Soviet Union decided to send its missiles to Cuba.
