In the 1920’s many of the mayors and citizens were undecided about keeping or tearing down the original "Iglesia Mayor" (Grand Church), which is located in Parque Vidal. By tearing it down it would make space for a re-designed and bigger plaza, relocating the cathedral in a nearby location. Many citizens insisted in keeping the original colonial building because it was the first and oldest standing heritage structures. But the old cathedral was demolished and the new Catedral de Santa Clara de Asis, Santa Clara was finished after two years.
