Catedral de Santa Clara de Asis, Santa Clara

If you are planning Sightseeing in Santa Clara in Cuba visit the impressive Catedral de Santa Clara de Asis, Santa Clara. This is a beautiful cathedral located in the city and is the most important religious building. The Catedral de Santa Clara de Asis, Santa Clara was built in 1923 after the original one in Parque Vidal was pulled down.

The architecture style of this Cuban Attraction is Neo Gothic and has a rich collection of lead stained glass windows. You can also see the original marble “pilon” or holy water basin used for baptizing. In the upper front is a beautiful statue of Jesus holding a monstrance made out of pure gold. The highlight of the Catedral de Santa Clara de Asis in Santa Clara is the larger than life statue of Mother Mary. It is known locally as the “la Virgen del camino” (Travelers' Virgin).

At the beginning of the Cuban Revolution, this statue used to be on the road to Havana. It was installed there to bless the incoming or outgoing travelers to the city. Later it was taken down and lost for more than three decades. Around 1995 the statue was re-discovered in a ditch covered by soil and undergrowth. The citizens couldn’t decide whether to take it to the museum or give it to the church. It was at last given to the religious authorities.

The construction of this Tourist Attraction in Santa Clara was a center of a heated electoral issue for ruling mayors in colonial times. In the 1920’s many of the mayors and citizens were undecided about keeping or tearing down the original "Iglesia Mayor" (Grand Church), which is located in Parque Vidal. By tearing it down it would make space for a re-designed and bigger plaza, relocating the cathedral in a nearby location. Many citizens insisted in keeping the original colonial building because it was the first and oldest standing heritage structures. But the old cathedral was demolished and the new Catedral de Santa Clara de Asis, Santa Clara was finished after two years.
