Christmas in Czech Republic is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and fan fare. The visit of St. Nicholas marks the beginning of celebrations for Christmas in Czech Republic. It is believed that children are visited by St. Nicholas on December 6th. These celebrations continue till the visit of the Three Kings. St. Nicholas is called Svaty Mikalas in Czech Republic and it is believed that he climbs down to earth from heaven on a golden rope along with his companions, an angel and a whip-carrying devil.

One of the popular Christmas traditions in Czech Republic is forecasting of a girl’s future at this time of the year. According to this practice, a girl puts a cherry twig in water on December 4th and if the blossoms before Christmas Eve, it is taken as a sign that the girl will get married sometime during the year.

Any talk about Christmas in Czech Republic will remain incomplete without a mention of its patron saint, the famous King Wenceslas of the Christmas Carol. According to legends, the goodness of King Wenceslas and his beliefs in Christianity incensed the wrath of his unkind mother and he was murdered by his brother on the steps of a Church. However, before King Wenceslas breathed his last, he asked for God's mercy for his brother's evil act.

The way Christmas is celebrated in Czech Republic is quite different from rest of Europe. For Czechs, Christmas is a quiet and peaceful religious time when they fast for one day and have baked carp for Christmas dinner. On the eve of Christmas, good children are visited by St Nicholas who brings gifts for them. Those children who have been bad are said to be tackled by the devil that comes with switches. In Czech Republic, Christmas celebration continue for three days and on the day of Christmas, churches throughout the country are adorned with evergreens and Christmas Trees. Most families go to Holy Mass or Pasterka at midnight and eat a soup made of cod roe in their homes. Often, tales of a mythical golden pig are told to each other at this dinner table.
