The Banana, Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the charming Tourist Destinations in Democratic Republic of Congo. Located in the Bas-Congo province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the Atlantic coast, Banana is a small seaport in the region. Banana, Democratic Republic of the Congo has a port that is situated in Banana Creek, an inlet about 1 kilometer wide on the north bank of the Congo River’s mouth.

The Banana port is located on the creek side of the spit, which shelters it from the ocean. It lies about 8 kilometers south-east of Muanda and connected by a paved road running along the coast. The port of Banana is of immense importance not only to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also to the adjacent areas and regions of Africa.

The port has an oil terminal 4 kilometers further upriver, to which tankers discharge while at anchor in the creek. The terminal has a quite separate road access east of Muanda. For getting to Banana, you can resort to the port. There is however another way of reaching Banana. You need to get to the much larger town of Muanda, from where you can easily get into Banana. In Muanda, there is an airport situated which is the nearest to Banana city. There is however no rail lines to travel to Banana, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The history of Banana state that the town was developed as a port in the 19th Century, largely as part of the Slave trade. Henry Morton Stanley arrived in Banana in the year 1879, at the start of an exploratory expedition funded by Leopold II of Belgium.

Following the Conference of Berlin, from 1884 to 1885, the European powers recognized Leopold’s claim to the Congo basin and in a ceremony held in 1885 at Banana, the king announced the establishment of the Congo Free State, headed by the king. Banana was the main Belgian naval base of the Congo until its independence in 1960.
