Tivoli

Tivoli, Copenhagen pulls in millions of tourists from far and wide. One of the chief tourist attractions in Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens is a popular amusement park and pleasure garden. If you want to indulge in complete amusement and pure leisure, just visit Tivoli, Copenhagen.

Opened to the public on August 15, 1843 and, Tivoli, Copenhagen is one of the oldest amusement parks along with Dyrehavsbakken which have been maintained to this day. The Tivoli amusement park in Copenhagen was formerly known as Tivoli & Vauxhall. Tivoli had an allusion to the Jardin de Tivoli in Paris and Vauxhall referring to the Vauxhall Gardens in London.

Georg Carstensen, the founder of Tivoli received a five-year charter to design Tivoli by addressing King Christian VIII with the famous lines which suggested that when the people were involved in much amusement, they would never indulge in petty politics. The monarch bestowed Carstensen access to about 15 acres of the fortified glacis outside Vesterport (the West Gate) at the annual rent of 945 kroner. Till the 1850s, Tivoli could be accessed through Vesterport.

From the very beginning, Tivoli, Copenhagen had a number of attractions. Several buildings in the brilliant style of an ideal Orient including a theatre, band stands, restaurants and cafés, flower gardens, and amusement rides featuring a merry-go-round and a primitive scenic railway were all found here from the very beginning.

Tivoli, Copenhagen is in the process of continuous development. But it has been able to retain much of its original charm and traditional flavor. Georg Carstensen in 1844 observed that Tivoli will never be finished. Walt Disney echoed the same words just a century later he spoke of his own Tivoli-inspired theme park. He maintained that Disneyland will remain as long as there was imagination in the world.

Enjoy absolute fun and amusement with the major attractions in Tivoli, Copenhagen. The Dragon Boat Lake and Dæmonen rollercoaster are popular amongst all age groups. The park is renowned for its wooden roller coaster, Rutsjebanen or as some people refer to it as Bjerg Banen (Mountain Track), constructed in 1914. It is recognized as one of the world's oldest wooden roller coasters that still functions. Tivoli also has the world's tallest carousel, Himmelskibet. A live music series called Fredagsrock (Friday Rock) takes place in the summer months in Tivoli, Copenhagen.
