Odense is located very close to Odense Fjord that is on the Odense River.
History
The 16th Century saw Odense being used a place of meeting. Till 1805, this was where the provincial assembly of Funen would sit.
The city is famous for its tower, Odinstårnet also called The Odin Tower. This tower as built in 1935 and is the second tallest in Europe after Eiffel Tower. Tragically this colossal tower was bombed in 1944 by the Danish Nazi. Today what stands there is only a small model of it. Prior to the Danish industrial revolution, Odense was considered the second largest city of Denmark. However, it recently lost its position to Aarhus.
Travel
Traveling to the city can be done by water and rail. Odense has a railway station which lies in the Copenhagen-Jutland route. There is also a deep canal which was dug during the period 1796 and 1806. This canal is 7.5 meters long and can be accessed from the fjord.
A ferry service was in operation between Funen and Zealand. However with the construction of the Great Belt Bridge traveling became faster. Rails started plying between these two islands in 1997, while road transport began the following year.
