Lakes in Djibouti



There are a number of lakes in Djibouti. Situated in Eastern Africa, Djibouti is officially known as the Republic of Djibouti. There is a plethora of places of interest situated in different parts of the country that are surely worth a visit. These places for sightseeing include various lakes in Djibouti.

There are two lakes in Djibouti, which attracts tourists the most. These lakes are -

Lake Asal

This lake is also called Lake Assal. It is a crater lake that lies 153 meters below sea level in the Afar Depression, which makes it the lowest point in Africa. Three layers of the earth's crust meet at the Afar Depression. Lake Asal is positioned at the southern border of the Tadjoura region near Dikhil area in the central part of the country. The Djibouti city is situated close to this site.

One of the popular lakes in Djibouti, Lake Asal is the most saline body of water in the world. In fact, the name Asal means ‘salty.’ There is 34.8 percent more salt in this beautiful lake in comparison to the Dead Sea.

It is easy to arrange a trip to Lake Asal. You will come across a number of salt flats at the site of this lake.

Lake Abbe

This salt lake is also called Lake Abhe Bad. It is part of a chain of six connected lakes, with the others being the Afambo, Bario, Gargori, Gummare, and Laitali lakes. Lake Abbe is positioned on the Ethiopia-Djibouti border. The lake is marked by its unique beauty.

There are several hot springs situated near Lake Abbe. You will come across numerous shepherds with their flocks at this site. There is a 50 meter high limestone chimney near this lake. The shooting of the popular movie, Planet of the Apes was done at this site of Lake Abbe in Djibouti.

Another attraction of Lake Abbe is the hordes of flamingos that flock to the site of this lake. You can also see the nomadic Afar people who reside near this lake. Lake Abbe is one of the famous lakes in Djibouti.
