Lake Abbe is the terminating point of the waters of the Awash River. This is a major river of Ethiopia. Lake Abbe in Djibouti is positioned at the centre of the Afar Depression. At this point, three layers of the earth's crust converge. Located on the northwestern side of the lake is the volcanic mountain Dama Ali.

Lake Abbe, Djibouti is renowned for the 50 meter high limestone chimney positioned at this site. You can witness steam venting from towering chimney. This helps you to locate this site from afar.

Nomadic Afar people dwell along the bank of Lake Abbe. These people belong to an ethnic group residing mainly in the Danakil Desert in the Afar Region of Ethiopia as well as Eritrea and Djibouti. These nomadic people are sometimes called Danakil.

Lake Abbe, Djibouti is also well-known for the flamingos that flock to this location. There are mainly two species of this beautiful bird – the Andean and the James's Flamingo.

Lake Abbe in Djibouti gained more popularity when the movie, Planet of the Apes was filmed at this site.
