The primary source of Lake Asal, Djibouti is the subsurface from the ocean. Subsurface springs are the other sources of the lake. These springs are fed by the Gulf of Tadjoura, which is the eastern extension of the Gulf of Aden. More specifically, the lake is fed by the Ghoubet Kharab bay, situated about 10 km southeast of Lake Asal, Djibouti.

Lake Asal, Djibouti is the saltiest lake in the world. In fact, its name means ‘salty lake.’ The lake contains 34.8 percent more salt than the Dead Sea. Significantly, the percentage of salt is as much as 39.8 percent at a depth of 20 meters. The lake is encircled by a salt pan which extends towards west and northwest. The salt is mined and transported by caravan to Ethiopia.
