Erratic Weather in Djibouti causes least precipitation in the country. Djibouti is also one of the hottest countries in the world. Although Republic of Djibouti is situated in equatorial tropical region the Weather in Djibouti is influenced by Khamsin or Chamsin wind. The Climate of Djibouti can be broadly classified as dry and extremely dry seasons. Sparse and erratic rainfall causes dry climate affecting the agriculture of the country.
From May to September the country suffers torrid weather. During the summer mercury rises up to 31°C in the capital city Djibouti while in rest of the country temperature soars to 40°C. The period between June and August is the hottest with a maximum temperature of 45°C. When northeastern monsoon wind begins to blow over the country, people get relief from scorching heat. From October to April the Djibouti enjoys warm weather with average daytime temperature of 37°C (99°F).
The tropical influence causes humidity all through the year. Yet mean annual rainfall is less than 13 centimeters (5 inches). In addition, the evaporation of red sea increases the level of humidity and thus affects the climate of Djibouti. Travelers can visit the country in the months of December and January when the temperature oscillate around 25°C. The Weather in Djibouti remains pleasant during this time.
Djibouti faces two seasons, a fresh season during which the fresh and wet Trade wind blows from the
North-East towards South-east and the other is the arid season when Khamsin wind blows over the country. The Trade wind comes from the Indian Ocean or the south of Arabia while dusty Khamsin wind blows violently from the Arabian Peninsula. Trade wind brings rain while Khamsin wind brings extreme dust and heat during the months of June, July and August.
The Khamsin originates when a low-pressure center moves eastward over the desert of Sahara or the southern Mediterranean Sea. On its front part it carries dust and sand from the desert while its rear portion is lot cooler for evaporation from Mediterranean Sea. Khamsin wind blows for an uninterrupted period of three to four days making the Weather in Djibouti arid and hot. Therefore, the summer months are to be avoided for traveling in Djibouti.
