Geography: The Dominican Republic is nestled along the Caribbean island of Hispaniola in the eastern side that engulfs Haiti. The province is even recognized by the Taíno natives as Quisqueya. Three chief mountain ranges that thrive along the region are The Central Mountains emerging from Haiti region that stretches till the southern part of the island. Antilles, Pico Duarte is the high-rise mountain peaks nestled within the region. Next being the Septentrional Mountains, extending to the Central Mountains, alienates the valleys of Cibao and the Atlantic coastal plains. Pico Diego de Ocampo is known as the high reach peak within the region. The third range being the Eastern Mountains, which is shortest among the two ranges, is located in the eastern part of the country. Innumerable rivers like the Soco, Higuamo and Romana is collectively called as 'Rio Dulce' along with rivers like the Yaque del Norte, Yaque del Sur, Yuna River, Yuma, and Bajabonico passes through this region.
History: The earliest residents settled along the Hispaniola Island were the Taínos inhabitants, on which lies the province of the Dominican Republic. Taíno were recognized as good or noble natives in their local language. Taínos left behind cave paintings, which defined their primitive existence. It was Christopher Columbus who discovered Hispaniola for the Spanish crown while he founded the first European settlement at La Isabela, within the territory of America in his next tour. Hispaniola spurred the Spanish invasion along the Caribbean and the American mainland. It was in 1697, Spain predicted the existence of French power along the western part of the island, which became a self-governing province known as Haiti. The rest part of the island was called Santo Domingo, which was soon dominated by the Haitians while it became independent and came to be known as Dominican Republic in the year 1844.

Economy: With a middle-income society, the present economy of Dominican Republic basically depends on sectors like agriculture, trade, services, and tourism. Agriculture is the chief sectors that brings along revenue within the country along with sustaining the present province with its export business. Tourism gives about $3 billion revenue earnings within the area annually. Free Trade Zone earnings and tourism have boomed the present export business. Even after the retail trade discrepancy, earnings gained from the tourism sector along with remittances from abroad residents that increased the overseas exchange assets in the area.
Society and Cultural Life: Nearly half of the residents thriving within the Dominican Republic inhabit the rural areas that are minor landholders existing in greater numbers. The ethnic groups residing within the region relate
to the European and the African source. A smaller group of East Asians especially Chinese, Japanese and Middle Easterners that is Lebanese are also located here. The prevalent religion thriving within the area is mainly comprised of Roman Catholics. The Spanish language is the most widely accepted vernacular spoken in the area. The natives belong the big Dominican family that is la familia dominicana. The people carry a rich heritage and are mainly humble in nature comprising of poor farmer dwellers.
Transport System:
- Travel to Dominican Republic – Travel through air while choosing your destination to Dominican Republic, which is indeed cheaper and quicker. There are several direct flights from the regions of Europe and the Americas that take you straight to the province. Air charge depends largely on the season, and the date of purchasing. Quite a few cruise ship lines pass through this region that give you a comfortable journey but make sure your departure tax is levied upon. The two chief crossing through which one can pass are lying in the areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. One is along the Jimaní or Malpasse crossroads linked with Port-au-Prince and Santo Domingo route. The other is the Dajabón and Ouanaminthe region connecting with Cap-Haïtian and Santiago roads.
- Traveling in Dominican Republic – Air Santo Domingo is the only source of transportation within the region of Dominican Republic. Buses are the best way to travel, while being low-priced and suitable that connects you to different regions within the area. One can even opt for renting a car, which might become luxurious and expensive. One can even hire a motorcycle, which are hassle free and cheap to use.
Administration and Government: The Dominican Republic holds a representative democratic system with powers vested amid self-governing executive, legislative, and judicial bodies. It is the president that chooses the cabinet, while it is upon the discretion of the legislative body to pass any kind of law, mainly headed by the commander in chief of the armed forces. The Senate and the House of Representatives exercise the Legislative power within the region. The Dominican Republic is separated into 31 chief provinces and carries a multi-party political system. The region holds national election based on presidential and municipal election. These 31 provinces elect its own presidential governor with mayors and municipal councils looking after the state level districts.
Educational Institutions: Learn at Millikin University where you may come across several summer programs taught in both Spanish and English languages within the Dominican Republic. Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo imparts you training on technology based programs. Study at Universidad Dominicana O&M for several graduates and post graduate programs. One my even study in universities like Universidad Católica Nordestana, Universidad Adventista Dominicana, Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Universidad Central del Este, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and many others.
