Formerly Machala was a lonely village. It had only 7549 neighbors. Today, it has over 250 thousand habitants. Over the years, it has grown into a thriving city.

The city of Machala lies to the south of Guayaquil. It is a good stopping point on the way to Huaquillas at the Peruvian border. It is the capital of El Oro Province and is also well known as the capital of Ecuador's main banana-producing region.

Machala is a very busy and commercial city. Apart from banana production the city is renowned for its shrimp production as well. As it is one of the largest Banana exporters in the world it is often nick-named the banana capital of the world.

The tell tale statue of El Bananero stands on the main road to Machala, southeast of the city. It represents a man carrying a large branch of bananas.

The most attractive sights from Machala are the Puerto Bolivar and the Jambeli islands.

Puerto Bolivar is the cities out port located to the south west. It is one of Ecuador's leading banana-exporting points.

The port is protected by a dense growth of mangroves. During the day one can make a pleasant waterfront detour with motorized boats to the Jambeli beaches. In February when it is hot and humid, Jambeli is the most visited place in Ecuador. Small hotels and restaurants offer basic facilities for visitors.

Also worth seeing in Machala is the Isla Del Amor. This place has an amazing abundance of birdlife. Here tourists can rent a canoe and paddle around the mangrove swamps on ones own or take a motorized boat tour of the harbor.

Apart from decent accommodation Machala also offers good dining options in the various down town restaurants of the city. The place also has bars, discos and other entertainment facilities for the enjoyment of the tourists.
