Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Mankind), Quito La Plaza de la Independencia, Quito is the master work of famous modern artist of Ecuador Oswaldo Guayasamín.
Though it was the dream project of Oswaldo Guayasamín, he could not see it functioning. This is because it was completed three years after his death in the year 1999. Guayasamín, who died in the year 1999 at the age of 90 had the plan of seeing the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Mankind), Quito La Plaza de la Independencia, Quito open on the first day of the new century. However, his wish was not fulfilled.
When you look at the architecture of the building you would find that there are Incan and indigenous mythological beliefs imbibed in the architecture. The building has three levels and the number 3 is used for making various motifs and architectural elements. There is eternal flame burning in the chapel's altar. This eternal flame is dedicated to those who died when they tried to defend human rights.
This building of Quito showcases man's progress through centuries by the medium of art. The collectibles of the Chapel of Mankind of Quito include many of the paintings, sculptures and murals by the artist. Here you would also find the personal collection of the artist. The pieces of colonial art, various archaeological findings and the collection of contemporary art that you can see in the museum are really worth watching. There is a circular space in the middle of the building beneath an unfinished dome mural. This mural portrays the millions of workers who died while working in the silver mines of Potosí, Bolivia.
There is a tree which was planted by Guayasamín himself in the garden surrounding the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Mankind), Quito La Plaza de la Independencia in Quito. You would find the grave of Oswaldo Guayasamín beneath this tree. This tree has been renamed as El Arbol de la Vida which means 'The Tree of Life'.
