El Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito, is also known as The Metropolitan Cultural Center. You would find this museum located in the heart of Quito. The location of the museum is at the southwest corner of the Main Square. You would also find the shrine of the Society of Jesus on the street Garcia Moreno while you are going to the Museum.

The draft of the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center Historic Quito was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and executed by the Company of the Historic Center. The main aim of the El Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito was to preserve and restore the heritage of Quito. The next mission of the Museum is to encourage the economic recovery of the city and improve the quality of the life of the individuals of the city. The El Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito also aims to strengthen cultural identity of the city.

The house in which the museum is situated, is a 400 year old complex that contains several public libraries, a museum and spaces where theaters and other cultural shows are held. It is presumed that one point of time it was an Incan Palace. The galleries of the main floor of the museum are used for hosting various temporary art exhibitions and for entering here you do not have to pay any fee. The large open courtyard has a glass ceiling. In the second level of the El Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito you would find the Museo Alberto Mena Caamaño. This museum is one of those few museums which at one point of time served as a prison and at some other point of time served as a University. However, now this museum houses a huge collection of colonial art.

It is better that before you start on your tour of the El Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito, you hire a guide. The cost of the guide is included in the entrance fee. The guide will also take you to a tour of the old Jesuit residences and the basement area of the Museo Alberto Mena Caamaño, where the prisoners used to stay.
