Half of the World, Quito is a part of the Quito city which was constructed in commemoration of the First Geodesic Mission that came to Ecuador in the year 1736. This Geodesic Mission was led by people such as Pedro Bouger, Luis Godin and Carlos Maria de la Condamine of France and Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa of Spain and Ecuadors' Pedro Vicente Maldonado. Their mission was to prove the roundness of Earth. The study for the mission lasted for nine years and after the end of the mission they started calling the territory of Quito as 'Territories of Ecuador'. Half of the World, Quito is a part of the city where you would find lots of excellent architectural marvels.
In the year 1802, another mission came to Ecuador under the supervision of Charles Perrier. The purpose was to corroborate the data collected by the first group of investigators. In the year 1836, the Ecuadorian geographer Luis Tufiño located all the landmarks that were identified by the First Mission. An obelisk of 10 meters was erected in San Antonio de Pichincha which was later transferred to Calacalí.
In the year 1979, the height of this monument was increased to 30 meters to emphasize the importance of the work of the First Geodesic Mission. Just next to this monument, you would find a villa which was built using classical colonial architectural style. The place where you would find the monument is said to be the place where the Equinox or the parallel imaginary line dividing the Earth in the northern and the southern hemispheres pass through. Here you would find a church, the greater park and a town hall.
