House of Benalcazar Museum, Quito



The House of Benalcazar Museum, Quito is another important attraction of Quito. This is a place which was built in honor of Captain Sebastian de Benalcazar, an important name in the Ecuador. He was one of the first colonial inhabitants of Quito. He was the muleteer of Sebastian Moyano. The House of Benalcazar Museum is located in such a position in the city that from here you can get an excellent view of the whole of the city. It was the idea of the architect of the building to construct it in such a way that the whole city grid can be easily viewed from here.

At one point of time the House of Benalcazar Museum, Quito was the home of Pedro de Puelles, the famous warrior who conquered Popayan. However, he could not live here for long since he was stabbed in the later years in the first revolt that took place in Quito.

The building that is now known as the House of Benalcazar Museum, Quito now do not have much similarity with the building that was in existence during the time of Pedro de Puelles. The construction of the present day building began in the beginning of the 18th century.

The House of Benalcazar Museum in Quito is now under the authority of the Institute of Hispanic Culture. This organization acts a bridge between the Spanish and the Ecuadorian cultures. This organization has taken the initiative of constituting a gallery where you would find an excellent collection of paintings and sculpture from the colonial rule of Ecuador. There is also a library attached with the House of Benalcazar Museum, Quito. This library houses important resources regarding the Iberian history and literature. Another part of this museum of Quito worth visiting, is the film library where you would find various documentaries both of Spain as well as of Ecuador.
