The architecture of the building as well as the valuable treasures kept within the church, are worth watching.
If you go through the history of the building, then you would see that the Cathedral of Quito was known for adobe walls and thatched roof till the mid 16th century. When Bishop García Díaz Arias took over the supervision, he decided to renovate the La Catedral church, Quito. Then the renovation works began in the church. The next bishop Pedro Rodríguez de Aguayo further continued with his work. At first, it was not possible to build this church of Quito facing the main square. The main barrier was the deep valley lying behind the church. Therefore it was decided that a stone atrium should be built along the northern side.
When the work began, the stone was brought down from Mount Pichincha and the work was completed in between the years 1562 and 1565 because of the enthusiastic collaboration of the neighboring people. After the construction of the atrium, altar pieces were made and then the pulpit was carved. In the year 1572, the La Catedral church in Quito was finally opened. However, lots of works were carried on afterwards in the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries also. The church that can be seen today is actually a culmination of the works carried out during these centuries.
The most significant construction that was carried out in the end of the 18th century was the great dome that was built to divide the atrium into two parts. The dome was built following the neo-classical style. From the dome, you can see a circular staircase coming down and leading to the part which is also known by the Shrine of Carondelet.
In the La Catedral Church, Quito you would also get to see various collectibles. La Catedral Church, Quito has the sculpture known as 'The Holy Shroud'. Other works are Virgin by Legarda and the group of the Denial of St Peter which was the work of Padre Carlos. Other master pieces include the 1668 painting of the death of the Virgin by Miguel de Santiago. This one which is located on the wall behind the choir and the series of portraits of various bishops on the chapter wall are collections worth watching.
