This city is located just outside the Western Cordillera and enjoys a subtropical climate. It is also 129 kilometers away from Quito, the capital. The city experiences torrential rain and the average annual rainfall ranges about 3,150 mm. Thus the city seems to be the wettest part in the country. There are also five major basins and micro basins. The best time to visit this part of Ecuador is between November and February.
History of Santo Domingo de Los Colorados
The city was known as the "Yumbos Province" in the beginning of the colonial era and was inhabited by tribal races such as niguas, yumbos and tsáchilas. The area witnessed a major change in the eighteenth century by withdrawing the native inhabitants. In 1899 the Liberal government formally established itself in the village of Santo Domingo de los Colorados. Finally in the decade of the sixties the region established itself as a major agricultural city in Ecuador.
