Temple of Abu Simbel



Temple of Abu Simbel is a popular tourist attractions and is often referred top as the second wonder of Egypt because of its architectural grandeur. The complex of the Temple of Abu Simbel houses two temples. The bigger one of the temples contain deities of Ra-Harakhty, Ptah and Amun, which were three Gods highly revered by the ancient Egyptians. The second one is dedicated to Nefertari. Ramses II's favorite wife. It has been recognized by the UNESCO as the World heritage Site.

The larger one of the two temples of Temple of Abu Simbel, contains the statue of Ramses II with crown with two layers featuring upper and lower Egypt. The temple took almost 20 years to be completed and is one of the most beautiful temples built during the reign of Ramses II. At the entrance of the temple lies four colossal structures of the Pharaoh Ramses II. The statues measure 20 meter in height, 35 meter wide and bears the structures of 22 baboons. These statues were carved out of the from the rock where the temple was located.

The smaller temples of Abu Simbel consists of the Temples of Hathor and Nefartari. This temple was placed at distance of 100 meter north east of the temple of Ramses II. The temples are dedicated to Goddess Hathor and emperor's wife Nefartari as the name imply. This the first temple in Egypt to be dedicated to a queen. These temples are brilliant masterpieces of ancient architecture. The design of the temples is a unique one and the structures of the temples are constructed in such a manner that sunlight can enter the innermost part of the temple only twice a year, on the days of 22nd Frbruary and 22nd October, which are the birthdays and days of accession to the throne of the Pharaoh.
