Mausoleum of the Aga Khan, Aswan
Mausoleum of the Aga Khan in Aswan is the mausoleum of Aga Khan III, Mohammed Shah. He was the famous spiritual leader of the group of Ismalian Muslims. When he died in the year 1957 he was buried here in the mausoleum which was erected above a majestic white villa which served as his residence. The Mausoleum of the Aga Khan, Aswan is located a whisper away from the River Nile. The mausoleum is a pink structure made of granite. The architecture of the mausoleum resembles that of the Fatimid tombs in Cairo. One will find the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan, Aswan tucked on the west bank of the city of Aswan, close to the Monastery of St. Simeons. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife. Till her death in 2000, whenever she stayed in the villa, she used to put a red rose on the tomb of his beloved husband. During his absence the gardener used to place the rose on the tomb of his master. His tomb was made of white Carrara marble. According to a rumor one day a single rose couldn't be found in Egypt. So, roses were flown to Aswan by a private jet from Paris to adorn the tomb of Aga Khan. Aga Khan after completing his education in Europe came to Egypt and became the
48th imam after his father. On his death in 1957 his grandson, Karim AGa Khan, became the next Imam. The Mausoleum of the Aga Khan, Aswan is a major attraction of the city.
