Rock Tombs, Aswan

Rock Tombs in Aswan is one of the most-visited tourist attractions in Aswan. It is situated towards the north of the Elephantine island. The Rock Tombs, Aswan are perched on a hill which houses the Kubbet el-Hawa, a sheikh's tomb. The Rock Tombs comprise the tombs of grandees and princes of Elephantine. The tombs date back to the ancient periods of Middle Kingdom and Old Kingdom. Here you will find 6th Dynasty Tombs and 12th Dynasty Tombs. These tombs are built in the same way as the tombs of Beni Hasan. Each of the tombs has a number. To reach the Tomb 31 you have to take the sandy path from the pier and climb up the hill. A beautiful staircase consisting of two flight of steps running parallely leads to the Tombs of 25 and 26. The tombs are adorned with lovely wall paintings which depict scenes from the daily lives of the princes and noblemen. They also contain inscriptions and hieroglyphic biographies which tell the adventurous stories of the journeys of the noblemen. At night spotlights hidden amidst the tombs light up the Rock Tombs, Aswan. The artistic work on the tombs of 31 and 36 can be considered to be at par with that of the tombs of Memphis.
