Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is a heritage site recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a set of two huge rock temples, which was built on the memory of Pharaoh Ramasses II in the 13th Century. Abu Simbel is located on the Western bank of Lake Nasser in Southern Egypt. The ancient site is also known as “Nubian Monument”.

The two huge temples of Abu Simbel in Egypt are situated near the border of Egypt and Sudan. The two temples were carved out of solid rocks at the Western shores of the Nile at the South of Aswan. The pair of two temples was built as an eternal monument for Pharaoh Ramesses II and his queen Nefertari to immortalize the victory of the Battle of Kadesh and to suppress the Nubian neighbors.

The entire complex was required to be relocated due to the rise of the water from Lake Nasser for the completion of the Aswan High Dam. Hence it was shifted to a highland above the Aswan Dam reservoir on an artificial hill. The entire process of relocating the temples was completed in 1960.

The complex of Abu Simel, a major Tourist Destination in Egypt, comprises of two temples. The larger temple is dedicated to the Pharaoh and three other gods of that time, named Ra-Harakhty, Ptah and Amun. The tourists can see four statues of the Pharaoh Ramasses II at the entrance of the temple, carved out of the rock. The temple also features the statues of the sons, daughters and mother of the Pharaoh beautifully decorated at the entrance of the temples. The interior of the temple is provided with triangular layout like other Egyptian temples and you will find that as you move ahead to the sanctuary from the entrance the size of the rooms decrease.

The smaller temple is dedicated to the queen of the pharaoh, Nefertari and another god of that time called Hathor. Each of the entrance doors of the temple is decorated with two statues of the Pharaoh and one of the Queen. The visitors can enjoy the “Light & Sound Show” organized at Abu Simbel in the evening. The show describes the two temples and offers descrptions on how it looked earlier. The tourists can reach the heritage site by air, road and boat. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and popular Egypt Tourist Destinations which must be visited by the travelers whenever they plan a trip to Egypt.
