The pharaoh played an imperative role in initiating the construction of this beautiful work of art. The beautiful temple was devoted to Amon Re who was meant to be the King of Gods.

The celebration of a very important festival called Opet was conducted within the premises of this temple. The statue of Amon who was the King of Gods was brought to the temple after a grand procession on the banks of the river Nile. The temple has been a major place of worship for the Egyptians over the years and some sort of renovation work was also carried out in the temple by Tutankhamen and Horemheb.

The entrance of the temple is situated on the northern side and a causeway is found in that direction which is lined by sphinxes. The entrance also showcases six statues of Ramases the Great which are found one after the other. The gateway of the Temple of Luxor also brings the guests to a courtyard. The courtyard also has three baroque shrines which are situated on the north western direction.When one tries to explore the rear side of the temple a granite shrine will come into view which has been dedicated to the Greek hero Alexander the Great. The temple also has a coptic church which is found in the western side.
