Valley of Kings



The Valley of Kings, Luxor is a major tourist attraction in Luxor which attracts thousands of tourists from all across the globe every year. The Valley of Kings, Luxor which is popularly known as Wadi el-Muluk in Arabic, comprises tombs being built for the Pharaohs along with the influential and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom. The tombs serve as the resting place for the kings and the nobles from the Eighteenth through the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt.

The geographical location of the Valley of Kings, Luxor is at 25 degrees 44'N and 32 degrees 36'E. The location of the Valley of Kings in Luxor is on the west bank of the River Nile. The beautiful location of the place makes it a popular destination among the tourists. The tourists can enjoy the close proximity from Thebes which is modern Luxor and the peak of the pyramid-shaped mountain namely Al-Qurn. The west valley of the place has only one tomb open to the general public. The tomb is known as the tomb of Ay, Tutankhamun's successor. The valley of Kings is also the burial place for various kings and nobles which include Amenhotep III. Until recently these places were not accessible to the general public, since excavation work was still on.

The official name of the site is The Great and Majestic Necropolis of the Millions of Years of the Pharaoh or Ta-sekhet-ma'at which means the Great Field. The valley was in use primarily for burials during the time period of 1539 BC to 1075 BC approximately, and was home to some 60 tombs. The tombs were known as Thutmose I and the array of tombs ended with that of Ramesses X or XI’s one. The valley of kings was not only used for the tombs of kings and the nobles; it is also the burial place for some of the wives and the children of the Pharaohs. The tombs at the site were mostly built of limestone and the quality is more or less very inconsistent. The architecture of the place is very attractive and it draws loads of tourists for this reason. A visit to the valley is an essential partt of Luxor Tours.
