Muyyad Mosque, Cairo

Muyyad Mosque, Cairo is located beside Bab Zuwayala in Cairo and actually consisted of a madrasa-khanqah. It was established between the years 1415 and 1422 AD. This madrasa-khanqah of Muyyad Mosque, Cairo unlike Barquq’s madrasa-khanqah consists of the study of authorized religion in accordance to the four rites which were exclusively dedicated to the Sufis only.

Muyyad Mosque, Cairo became a landmark and one of the important mosques in Cairo. Initially the place had bad connotations since there was a prison beside Bab Zuwayala from where Al Muayyad managed to escape. He promised that if he ever became a sultan he would convert the infested prison into a religious place for the education of scholars. Later on when he became a king he constructed the Muyyad Mosque in Cairo.

Due to the Sultan’s grand contribution the madrasa became one of the renowned academic institutions during the 15th century. A great library was formed and the most prominent scholars of the day took the responsibility of the library.

Muyyad Mosque, Cairo had three minarets above the towers of the Bab Zuwayala. They are twin towers but the third tower near the western doorway was varied in structure. This third tower was ruined during the 19th century. The carved chevrons offer an awesome instance of surface decoration for engraved stonework domes from this period.

Muyyad Mosque, Cairo actually had four porticos and four doorways. The major porticos are one analogous to Bab Zuwayla on the area of the Fatimid southern city wall which was reconstructed in the 19th century, and the portico vertical to Bab Zuwayla on its left with the principle portal.

The entrance hall of the mosque is probably the most magnificent feature of the entire mosque. Presently people enter the mosque through the crypt but actually there was a direct entry into the courtyard. The mausoleum dome which has an external alike to that Faraj Ibn Barquq is smaller and has two commemoratives. This is the place where Sultan al-Mu’ayyad and his son were buried.

The sanctuary is greatly adorned with marble divided by blue glass colonnettes. A coated and gold wooden ceiling, stucco grilled windows and marvelous doors inlaid with wood and ivory along with the marble columns with the pre-Islamic capitals, add to the luxury of the embellishment. Overall the mosque is a really beautiful and marvelous piece of structure to visit.
