For over two centuries the Spanish held their sway over El Salvador only to be conquered by Napoleon. It was in 1821 that the El Salvador asserted their independence from Spain and together with Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua formed the United Provinces of Central America. Some serious problems began in the region in 1932 which continued for about 12 years during which El Salvador witnessed untold misery and destruction. After the end of the civil war El Salvador salvaged peace and began to make rapid developments which have ultimately resulted in the emergence of a peaceful and a beautiful holiday destination for tourism. Temperature in the country varies with elevation and seasonal changes. The areas near the Pacific Ocean are generally hot and humid. The areas at the higher elevation experiences temperature that sometimes drop below the freezing point. May to September is quite rainy.
