The round part of the church was constructed in about 1130 by the ‘fraternity of the Holy Sepulchre’ on the lines of the round church in Jerusalem called the Church of the Holy Sepulchre built by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 4th century.

The church was formerly a secluded chapel on the main road. Then it gained importance as a normal parish church in the 13th century with a proper chancel and a north aisle. The construction of a heavy gothic tower over the round nave in the 15th century resulted in the partial collapse in the round ambulatory in 1841. During the vigorous repair and restoration work, it was replaced by the conical spire which you can see today. The south aisle and bell tower were the new additions and the whole east wall was completely refurbished. Today the Round Church, Cambridge aims at stressing on the influence of Christianity on the story of Cambridge and western culture and the impact of secularism.
