History of England

The History of England has fascinated many researchers and enthusiasts alike. England is not only the largest country of United Kingdom, but it is also the most populous. England as we know of today was a result of division that dates back to the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century. Though, ever since the 10th century, the territory of England has been politically united, prior to that and after James VI of Scotland ascended to the throne of England in 1603, the history of England can hardly be distinguished from that of Scotland and Welsh. The best way to learn about England History and heritage is to turn the pages of its past by various time periods. The History of England can be studied by categorizing it in the following periods:

  • Prehistoric Britain
Archaeological evidence suggests that southern old Britannia had been colonized by humans long before the rest of the British Isles was occupied by humans. This was due to the more hospitable climatic conditions that prevailed in what was southern old Britannia at that time.

  • Roman Britain
Southern Britain was invaded by Julius Caesar in 55 and 54 BC and who wrote about it in De Bello Gallico, mentioning that the population of southern Britannia was extremely large and had many common features with the Belgae of the Low Countries. Coins that were in circulation at that time also throw some light on the work of later Roman historians and provide the names of some of the rulers of the disparate tribes at that time.

  • Anglo-Saxon Era
Roman rule in Britain started crumbling around 410 and present day England was progressively settled by Germanic groups including Jutes, Frisians, Saxons and Angles who were collectively known as Anglo-Saxons.

  • Tudor Era
Queen Elizabeth was the most prominent ruler of Tudor Era and her period is seen as the most decisive one of this era which gave rise to many important questions which were answered in the next century and during the English Civil War. With the end of Civil War, English colonization began that ultimately led to Industrial Revolution in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
